Maybe you should try going to an online encyclopedia. Try encarta.com. I just checked under the keyword "computer" and among the information, there's a History section. It's pretty concise, but I really don't know how much information you need, so that's why I'm suggesting this one. There's probably hundreds of books about that topic, though.
