Putin, Russian president held to ransom a country`s Gas supply until aggreements were met to satisfy his agenda, its scary to think that either computers could control our day to day lives, by stopping a gas line supplying a country with gas with a push of a button, or simply just crashing, bringing a country to its basic knees. How far can this go?

I'll most probably get shot down in flames for this reply - but here goes anyway.

A lot of this problem stems back to the Thatcher era. What possessed the Government of the time to close down and allow the demise of our basic raw material industries has always been a mystery to me.

As an island we need to be self sufficient in at least the basics. It is a belief that protected us for centuries. We are no longer even close.

We require coal %26 steel from Poland. Gas from Russia and ships from Japan or anywhere else that can provide them. And they are just the one's that spring quickly to mind.

Compare that to just about any other Country in the World. The truth of the matter is that we can be cut off from any of these basic requirements at any time - frightening isn't it.

Perhaps this is why so much is being invested in the evaluation and exploitation of so-called alternative energy sources. Nothing to do with global warming.
