the popular way to do this today is with a router. connect a router to your (external) modem, and then connect the six computers to the router. the router should be able to dial the connection on the modem.

another way, is to use one of the computers as a router. this will mean this computer will have to be turned on for the others to be able to connect. in this method, connect one computer to the modem normally from one Ethernet interface, and to a hub or switch from a second ethernet interface. then, connect all other five computers to the hub. now, use what is called Internet Connection Sharing in windows to share your internet connection with other computers on the network, and you're set.
all you need is a 6 port router with built in modem. then just plug your phone line into your router and then your six computers into the ethernet ports using crossover cables. make sure all six computers have either an onboard lan port or a lan card in them.
You will need to purchase an 8 port router
get one internet connection than add WiFi and you can use all 6 computers on the one internet account.
