I have a computer in one room with DSL connection thru Ethernet Jack and I would like to add an additional telephone line with internet (DSL thru Ethernet) in the garage. I have an attic where I can go into and split the line. Is this possible by simply splitting the line in the attic? Would I be able to use the internet on both computers at the same time? Thanks.

Yes but keep in mind that you're sharing the bandwidth. Think of it as a pie. If you you're getting 50%, then there's only 50% left for the other guy.

I read anothers note of a cross over cable, that would do it you want. It's called a Serial Link Cable, Nice but you should use a router. And again wired is safe.

What your answer is to why it won't work is you have the wrong cable modem. You need one that has the ethernet included. Mine is wireless with 4 ports for ethernet and 1 USB connection for the computer. Either upgrade to a router or change modem to one that has router included. (May be cheaper to find a routher and use ethernet)

PS: Make sure your modem hooks to your usb and not the ethernet card, if you get a router. If not you will have to find another way to connect the router ???? Most Cable Modems will use both USB/Ethernet to hook up, but make sure.

You need a hub or switch. Switches are much faster and more reliable than hubs. I highly recommend Linksys switches. You can find a good one for about $40 at a computer store.

Plug your high speed internet cable into the switch. Then plug as many PCs as you want into the other switch ports. It's that simple!

If a computer is using one port, if another computer uses it, the stream will be mixed up. Your router takes a request from you and maps it to a port and sends it via aim. Now the aim user and server only see your external IP. When your router receives a response to that port, it knows to send it back to your computer. So the AIM server will end up sending back a reply and your router will not know which computer it came from if there are multiple ports.

I do not have an AIM client here, but I am certain they must have the ability to map the ports to something else. Like computer A can have AIM configured to accept incoming at 8001 and computer B at 8002. This is the only way to easily do it. then on the router have 8001 map back to A and 80002 map to B

My original computer started as a bunch of odd parts, some new but most of them used. I scavenged the case, a CD drive and some other parts from a computer that my brother used to own. As the story goes, my brother was in his home when an accident outside brought a electric pole down to the ground and his house was subjected to over 7000 volts of electricity, blowing up just about every electrical appliance, light bulb and wall socket in the house. The house was condemned by the insurance company and all his stuff was covered, including his fried 'puter. Anyways, I took some of the salvageable parts and Incorporated them into my first "homegrown" computer.

Yup, it's fair. I wouldn't even call it spying. I'm guessing at the beginning of the school year you had to sign an Internet Usage Agreement. if say in this case the school has ONE phone line for internet connection then anyone looking at the computer network from the internet would see the same IP address that of the schools gateway (modem/router).

however internally each computer will have it's own IP address provided by the DHCP server on the Router.

so in short YES the external IP address as seen by a web browser outside on the WAN and not the internal LAN of the shool library (in this case).

I know nothing about networking, but you can save your bookmarks (or Outlook address book, for that matter) to a thumb drive. Go to favourite and then Import/Export and follow the wizard for exporting bookmarks (might be handy to export cookies as well).
If you are using FireFox, they have a nice tool called Foxmarks that does this. I have used it for about a year and it works great. It syncs all your bookmarks against a master list stored on a server at periodic intervals (and you are manually sync whenever you like too).

There are a million things you could put into a tutorial... but it all depends what you are trying to teach.

Personally most of the tutorials I ever read are related to programming - videos are largely useless for this purpose anyways.

If the DSL modem only has one ethernet (I guess that is the name of the cable you are referring to) connection, you will need to get a router or a hub and it will split the connection and let you share it between several computers. Get a Wireless Router. The Linksys - WRT54G (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite... is a really popular and inexpensive option.

As said above, install the router near your internet modem. You can run an ethernet cable to computers nearby and use the wireless capabilities for the other computers.

That will be the one your router and modem are connected to. Its simple, any system that will act as a server must have at least two network card, except the laptop is connecting to the internet using an external modem connected to its serial port, then you can use the network port to share the internet connection.

In that case, you connect all the system together using an ethernet switch (8 port switch will be ok). If the systems are running windows XP, then follow these step

1. Open control panel

2. Click on Network and internet connections

3. Click on network setup wizard

4. Click next twice

When the wizard give you option like:

5. For the laptop, choose option 1 and the complete the wizard.

6. For the other computers, run the wizard the same way but choose option 2.

If you have a high-speed connection, try the network-install version of Debian. It took about 2 hours on my DSL... a dial-up would take over 2 days, and you'd have to start from scratch if you got disconnected.

It depends on what kind of router that you have. If possible, just directly connect the printer via USB to the router, or if your printer can handle it, directly link an ethernet cable from the printer into the router. Your internet connection doesn't affect it at all, it's just all about the printer. You might also consider faxing everything your printer, and then the printer will just print it out.

Because you do not need the LCD I would just go for the lower cost unit. It has similar specs according to what you wrote. The biggest diference is the warrenty. If you are concered about that most places offer an extended warrenty. If you are concerened about it just ask about the extended warrenty plan that the store option.

Just remember that you still need to purchase Internet security software regardless. HP has a trial of Norton but I'm not a fan of them. Hope this helps

the popular way to do this today is with a router. connect a router to your (external) modem, and then connect the six computers to the router. the router should be able to dial the connection on the modem.

It depends on how much time and money you have, and the type of commitment you want to make, which career choice you'll be able to make. The most popular IT jobs are database and networking jobs right now. If you click on high, it should bring you to a page where a TV is and a "waving flag" on the screen. After about 7 seconds, or when you click a link, you come to another page where a video should play. The videos are .flv files embedded into a .swf file. The problem is when I check the site on other computers, sometimes the video plays and sometimes it doesnt. The .swf file usually always comes up (the television set) but the .flv file does not always play. Any ideas why this would be?

As and EE coming out, you aren't an engineer unless you pass the engineer exam. in the mean time, you'll probably land a job as a hardware specialist. you get paid as an engineer and fix computer on a larger scale. an associate degree will get you a job, but it's not as permant or high paying. IT jobs are like roller coaster rides, the demand goes up and down. invest in more education and it'll be less bumpy. It's all about your certifications.

It seems like everyone from musicians to graphic artists use Mac, so I'm guessing there has to be some value in making that decision. However, I tried both and can't really tell a difference in the quality of output the computers produce.

You need recording software first! Click start, programs, accessories, entertainment, sound recorder. This is some funky recording software at best but it will show you what I mean. You may have to open its properies to select your mic.

what program are you using to record? are you sure your soundcard has recording capability? just make sure and go to my devices and look at your soundcard. make sure it has the ability to record.

You build a LAN between the two computers and share the drive, its the only way.

You will need a Ethernet adapter in each, unless you have integrated Ethernet on the MB.

Then you will need a Ethernet crossover cable connected between the 2.

Then you run network wizard on both, and enable file/print sharing, then connect the storage drive to one of them and configure the drive for shared (right-click drive letter- properties).
It's possible but both computers need to be connected somehow, wireless or wired. Then once both computers are on the same network right click on the external hard drive's icon in My Computer and pick Sharing and security (WinXP Pro, basic should have something similar) and check the box to share the hard drive.

no, because it require restart, but you can install updates or application through the network using Active directory
You can, but you need a multi-license from Microsoft. Otherwise if you load all the machines from one XP disk, the second machine to connect to the activation site will de-activate you XP disk, rendering it useless. Most other MS software now suffers the same problem.
believe it or not there is a way to do this , but #1 you need a volume license from microsoft and you would have to know how to flash a ISO onto the Hard drive . larger companies that have more then say 50 computers don't have time to be reformating pc's , since most of my companies work stations use the same type pc , we have a ghost image that we use . i can restore most pc's with all the programs and drivers installed in about 7 minutes , saves a ton of time

Looking for a deeply fulfilling carrer, Fixing computers?

I've been reading a lot lately about finding the perfect career. Many people put forth the idea that your work should be an extension of something you enjoy doing anyways. In other words "Your job should be something you would do or are doing for free."

Well, I've had a hard time with this concept mainly because I don't really have any hobbies.

So today, as I sit at home and try to fix a laptop my friend brought over, I realize that I really enjoy fixing broken computers! I like trouble shooting them, I like running the diagnostic programs on them, I like the satisfying feeling i get when I purge viri and spyware from a hard disk. I feel good when i isolate a bad piece of RAM.

So my question is, If i were to pursue my passion, what would and could i do? Also, over the long term, where would i end up if i pursued that path? Keep in mind that I have zero technical training and don't have a college degree.

I would suggest you try a small ad in your local newspaper, stating your hourly rate. Many people who are less computer savvy would

rather pay someone to come to their homes than bring it in.

Yes it is. You will however need to have an intermediary service in between to control the amount of bandwidth between the PCs' and the router. Most routers do not come with the ability to control the amount of bandwidth at a network node level.

You will need to setup a proxy server that would 'collect' requests from your PCs' and forward the requests to the router or firewall. A proxy server will also cache all requests and hence when a similar request is made by another user, it is served much quicker and at the same time saving bandwidth.

There should be no problem in doing that. The only problem is that you would then be accessing your available bandwidth twice which could cause some slowdown in your interenet speed.

The only exception would be if each modem was on another telephone line.

You can't use them at the same time, but you can use one when the other is not being used so long as the unused one is not connected.
If they are ADSL (broadband) modems the answer is NO, I found this out years ago when BT sent me a second identical modem after a package upgrade. Again if they are ADSL modems then you will need a Router (either wired or wireless) plugged into one of them (keep the other as a spare) to connect both computers to the Internet.

As your ISP is Talk Talk I doubt it is dial-up, but if it is, then using two modems is the same answer unless you have two phone lines.

Your analogy to man-made devices is somewhat of a backwards take on things, as most machinery is actually made to mimic living things. Nevertheless, machines or beings, both are designed to take some form of energy from the surrounding environment, and convert it into work.

I've been using computers (PCs specifically) for around 12 years and I've been on the 'net for just under 10 years (before hotmail.com - ahem!)

I am completely self-taught in all aspects. You read the odd manual, break your computer on occasions and then work out how to fix it, become hooked on wikipedia.

One example for you was around 7 years ago, when I installed my processor heatsink the wrong way around and fried my CPU (smoke and everything!) - oops... won't do that again. You live and learn!

Contact local suppliers of computers and agencies such as United Way they often will assist schools in need of equipment and supplies. It never hurts to call the computer manufacter either but you want to speak to the corporate office and ask for public relations. You may also check with local employers and ask if they will donate old equipment they are changing out to your school. It is tax write off for them and most companies replace computer equipment every 3 years so the systems will not be to far out of date.

MS and other software companies also donate software to schools or non profit groups so call them as well for any software you need to teach the children as well. Be prepared to submit requests in writing as most companies do have processes in place that require specail forms or written requests detailing need and requirements.

It depends. If your provider will allow multiple computers and provide addresses through DHCP, then just hook everything into the hub.

But, if your provider restricts the number of computers, then you need a router or firewall that will do NAT/PAT.

I like your thinking, trying to re-use old technology for something new but, it would be much easier and faster to write code to do the same thing and burn to a CD-ROM disk.
The problem with high speed copying to a tape is static producing 'snaps' on the tape. Tape systems were in specially controlled computer rooms where humidity and temperature were controlled, not just for computer cooling purposes, but to reduce the risk of static electricity ruining the tapes. Also, audio tape systems stored the data in mono format so you would have to make sure you could master the tapes in mono anyways. The other major drawback was large programs require very large tape storage. Audio cassettes were typically used for programs under 1 Meg.

Mouse over the Mail Icon under where it says (Hi, your Yahoo! id).

You should get a drop down menu with your latest emails displayed.

Select an email and click it. You then get to a new page about Shortcuts, but just select the button for Mail and it should take you to your Mail page.

It wasn't getting redirected to the shortcuts page on some servers and not going to the mail page.

I hope this helps some until Yahoo! Mail gets a fix for us.
