Linux OS's that work on old computers?

I'm wondering what Linux OS's work on old computers. I tried Xubuntu and I didn't like it that much.

If you have a high-speed connection, try the network-install version of Debian. It took about 2 hours on my DSL... a dial-up would take over 2 days, and you'd have to start from scratch if you got disconnected.

On the other hand, the downloadable CD-only installer is a 14-CD set.

Debian was the only distrubtion that installed successfully every time on ALL of the old dinosaur computers that I could get my hands on, even the ones where Knoppix failed to start (Knoppix is based on Debian).

It uses the Gnome desktop by default. KDE is installable as wel, but it's more memory- and CPU-hungry.

i've used knoppix on an older system and it worked fine

What are the minimum system requirements?

* Intel-compatible CPU (i486 or later),

* 32 MB of RAM for text mode, at least 96 MB for graphics mode with KDE (at least 128 MB of RAM is recommended to use the various office products),

* bootable CD-ROM drive, or a boot floppy and standard CD-ROM (IDE/ATAPI or SCSI),

* standard SVGA-compatible graphics card,

* serial or PS/2 standard mouse or IMPS/2-compatible USB-mouse.
Try damn small linux or peanut linux. Both are very small and will run on older computers.
