Is it possible for me to share folders with a friend that lives on the other side of town? I know how to do it between computers within a network, but since we aren't connected directly, is there any way to enable folder sharing?

Hamachi is a good choice because you can effectively join the networks together and share files... be careful who you let into your network though as they will all be able to see your files
