I have gone into the audio properties, volume control of every sound device, Control Panel, sound and audio devices configuration - you name it, I've been trying for several weeks on and off. What am I missing???

Please note that the microphone is plugged in correctly, my speakers are turned on a working and the microphone works on other devices. I've even tried several different microphones on both computers - no luck.

I am desperate. Any suggestions?

You need recording software first! Click start, programs, accessories, entertainment, sound recorder. This is some funky recording software at best but it will show you what I mean. You may have to open its properies to select your mic.

what program are you using to record? are you sure your soundcard has recording capability? just make sure and go to my devices and look at your soundcard. make sure it has the ability to record.
dumb question, but have you checked the advanced audio/volume control settings to make sure your microphone is not muted.
