Electro-mechanical from 1920 to 1941.

The British had a code-breaking computer (electronic) in 1941 at Bletchley Park.

The first general-purpose electronic computer was the ENIAC, made in 1946 by Mauchly and Echert. (spelling?).

Once the transistor was invented in 1949 by Shockly (and others) the **** hit the fan.

This is entirely from memory and I may have some dates wrong.

Look up Fortran, COBOL, and Captain Grace Hopper (cool Lady).
