Im looking to hook two computers together to get a bunch of files from one to the other. Im not looking for a perminate solution here. One computer is running Win 2000 and the other is a XP box. They both have network cards installed. Thanks.
Whats the easiest and/or cheapest way to connect two computers together?anti virus
Seems like the simplest in your situation would be to get a CAT5 "cross-over" cable and connect the NIC in one computer directly to the NIC in the other. Alternatively, get two regular CAT5 cables and a hub and connect them that way. If you don't have this stuff, you could probably borrow from a friend so you wouldn't be out any money.
Assuming you are using Windows, "share" (right click, properties) the directory with the files you want to copy. Om the other computer, go into "network" and find the files. Copy them to the second computer. That should work.

unplug the hard drive from one and plug it into the others ide cable. transfer your files and then put hard drive back in old machine.
Simplest way is to connect the two via ethernet cable. You probably already have some around your house (to connect a modem to a router or a router to a computer). It looks like the link I posted in the sources. Simple connect the computers via their networking cards (if they are not integrated) and windows XP should detect the connection automatically.
crossover cable
