How come I am not receiving a connection when attempting to network 2 computers through my D-Link ro

I have my ethernet cable connected from my cable modem to the WAN outlet on the back of the d-link router. The light flickered but then went out. I do have power to the router. I also attempted to connect both computers in lines 1 and 2 from the back of the computers to the router, and these lights are not turning on either. Why is it that I cannot receive connection? My computer receives connection find on it's own when connected to the cable modem without any attempt to network.

one of two reasons ... either you need to bridge your modem or you have isp ports that your service provider needs to open for you.

Try finding the reset button in the back of the router and hold it for 45 seconds then release it. The lights should go through a series of flashings etc and then the router is done resetting itself. If it still isn't working I recommend you return the product.
You could have 1 of 3 problems it could either be a software problem or a hardware problem or both. You have to think of it like this you could have a dice and have a combination of problems with your D-link router.
sounds like the router went bad...you said the light flickered but then went out when you plugged the cable from the modem to the back of the router (internet connection)? LIne out 1 and 2 should be lit also. Is the router plugged into electrical source? check for blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers. You should at least be getting a light where the modem is connected to the router...reread the instructions and check dslreports.com . Also, you should be able to run the setup of the router from one of your computers that's connected to the router. The router should have a setup wizard that you run from the browser of the computer it's connected to.
Connecting 2 computers is convenient for transferring files, making backups of data, sharing resources like a printers and CD Writers. . Depending on the resources available and applications, there are different methods for connecting 2 computers. More information at
