What's the purpose of making faster computers?

The brain can absorb only so much before there's overload. So why are they making computers faster? I mean what is it that we need to learn faster or absorb more? And at what point will "faster" come to a screeching halt?

Computers need to be faster to process more information. As more information is processed, more is possible at one time. We don't need to learn faster or absorb more, we need to upgrade our technology to get ready for the future. Think about it, just a few years ago, 100gigs was considered alot, now a terabyte is becoming normal.

Information processing is going to lead the way for everything computer based. This is why faster becomes the goal.

However, faster computers means you can run better graphics without slowdown (new video games).

People running programs with large databases will notice slowdown (lag time). Animators can use faster computers.

thats a very simple answer. its very common sense. with faster computers we can do alot more. it will run efficiently, it will save disk space and it will be comfortable to use, especially for heavy pc users who do word processing and internet surfing.

Because no one likes to wait for information.They grow impatient.For instance dial up.By the time you get connected you are booted off.Time will tell when it comes to a halt.
If I'm waiting 3 minutes to load something, I'm not absorbing anything but boredom. It doesn't mean you have to read faster, silly head.
To some extent, faster computers are indeed not necessary. People can easily do things like office work or surf the internet on computers far "worse" then the ones sold today. Even as far as games go, I think developers could easily write games that required less than they do; that's what they do with consoles, after all. Only heavy work like video editing should require more powerful computers.

Really, the argument is the same as "Why do people need faster cars?" They both get us there, and the speed limit is still 65 MPH. So why bother? Because it gives us something to lust after, and something to brag about when we get it.
The purpose of making faster computers maybe is because it will allow the computers to process the information much more faster, for us to get to the information we want (Internet, or in our computer) more easily and faster.
