Is there a way to connect two computers together with a cable and transfer files?

It seems like there should be a way to do this.

I'm reformting my PC tonight and thought about taking my work laptop home and moving a few files over to it that I want to save off of my PC. I know there are other ways to do this like with an external harddrive and such...but is there a way to connect these two computers and simply move files over?

You can connect the two via a router and enable file sharing, just go to start-%26gt; help then type file sharing.

cross-over network !!
Yes. Few ways to do it. Best method would be one of these three.

a. Cross cable Category 5/6 LAN cable

b. Cross cable USB

c. Cross cable Firewire

I prefer LAN cable. You need to set fix ip to both of you rcomputer. Put it in sequence e.g

Computer 1: 10.1.1.1

Computer 2: 10.1.1.2

Also set the workgroup to be the same or use some software such us vnc to transfer the files.
all you need is a cross-over cable and you can transfer files peer to peer. They make em for com ports and USB. The Com port version (older) has a max thruput of 115,200bps. I think the USB is even faster.

You can use these with systems older than XP.. jsut have to use hyperterminal to establish a connection.
If they are both XP or above you can use either a crossover cable or a straight network cable
IF you want a detailed answer, you should provide details in your question.

Such as what are both of these machines running, and what ports each one has.

There are a huge number of solutions for this, but without some kind of starting point its really not possible to recommend a specific one.
