How can I keep my kids from screwing up their computers??

My kids have computers in their rooms. Every month or so they start complaining that the computers are slow. They are usually "gunked up" with the usual Kid crap. Any suggestions?

- Keep computer(s) in a common area.

- Restrict their access privilege -- Only parent should have administrator rights.

- Set rules what they can / can't do online.

- Tell them to recommend software, they you decide whether it can be installed.

- Make a system restore CD/DVD (Acronis True Image is an example) so it's easy to reinstall the operating system if the machine is messed up.

- You can also invest in software that restricts certain Web sites. There is also a hardware device (a cube -- can't remember name) that you can install on your broadband connection. It costs annual subscription but automatically updates itself and forces all the computers on your home network to obey the rules you set.

Don't hesitate to impose rules. You are the parent. The rules will keep them safe and help prevent time wasting problems.

AIM video uses specific ports to allow video communication. However, my router uses NAT so I can only foward ports to one ip address. I want t know if there is a way to open the ports and allow more computers to use them. ex: I want to be able to do video aim with someone on my desktop, then disconnect form video, and then connect back to video with my laptop connected wirelessly. I dont care if i have to buy something else i just want it to work!

If a computer is using one port, if another computer uses it, the stream will be mixed up. Your router takes a request from you and maps it to a port and sends it via aim. Now the aim user and server only see your external IP. When your router receives a response to that port, it knows to send it back to your computer. So the AIM server will end up sending back a reply and your router will not know which computer it came from if there are multiple ports.

I do not have an AIM client here, but I am certain they must have the ability to map the ports to something else. Like computer A can have AIM configured to accept incoming at 8001 and computer B at 8002. This is the only way to easily do it. then on the router have 8001 map back to A and 80002 map to B

Not sure how to do it with NAT but a router that supported PAT (Port Address Translation) would probably work since all computers would use the same IP address but are identified by different port numbers. Google PAT

I don't think it's weird...I named mine...but I have a story behind it also.

My original computer started as a bunch of odd parts, some new but most of them used. I scavenged the case, a CD drive and some other parts from a computer that my brother used to own. As the story goes, my brother was in his home when an accident outside brought a electric pole down to the ground and his house was subjected to over 7000 volts of electricity, blowing up just about every electrical appliance, light bulb and wall socket in the house. The house was condemned by the insurance company and all his stuff was covered, including his fried 'puter. Anyways, I took some of the salvageable parts and Incorporated them into my first "homegrown" computer.
